Steampunk Fractal - A Ship for All Destinations

Description

Travel through space and time, across every land, across every culture. “All aboard for the XSS Infinitum!” A beautiful fractal sunset falling over the ocean, and a fractal steampunk ship bathing in the sun’s last light before teleporting between worlds. Small spirals and fractals play in the clouds, twisting the world itself. The nearer the clouds draw to the mass engine at the top, the more they turn in turbulent spirals. Even the stars and the ocean are mixed with fractals. On this journey, there is no end; there is only forward. Bring me that horizon!

"Captain and crew, Captain and crew, Take me, oh take me To anywhere new."
~Shel Silverstein, Needles and Pins

According to the legend told by Batoruco, the ship was designed by a sorcerer, and empowered to sail towards all four winds at the same time. They had trouble sinking. However, one of these was discovered and brought back to life, re-engineered to sail again. Machines were activated at all four corners of the vessel, growing smaller and smaller into spirals, infinitely small until they crossed into different worlds. A mass generator was added at the very top, giving the ship the ability to change its weight and density, and allowing it to cross the plane of time itself. This is no ship merely to cross the oceans, but to cross the skies, to cross space, and to cross the aeons. It is both anchor and vessel. It is the very heart of the Compass Rose. This is a ship for all destinations.

:iconj-a-v-i-e-r: :iconbatoruco: Dedicated to the Apophysis master Javier Ontiveros -- AKA, Batoruco; AKA, "The Crazy Old Man" (January 14, 1952 – July 31st, 2009) -- who designed the original version of this fractal ship in Xenodream, and who taught me almost everything I know about fractals. Batoruco is the reason I'm here on DeviantArt, and who taught me how to blend fractals organically into mixes. Here's to you, you crazy old man. Ya es tiempo hermano. Sail ever onward!

PS: I actually wanted to write more, so much more... on the story, on Batoruco... . and just feeling empty for words. Drained. I definitely have a limit to how much I can communicate before I just run out. Empty. I'll likely update this later. . it needs more. Then again, nothing would be good enough for me in this case.

Incept: Building on the original Xenodream parameters, I made only small adjustments. On Holon 2, I adjusted the Y Scale to 101, heightening the rods of the ship so that they merged completely. I also moved out the conch structures of the outer arms, widening the overall berth of the vessel. With a final adjustment to the palette, I rendered it and moved it into the center of the ocean landscape that would become its home. The stars required more than a week to render in Apophysis, but I was able to use my brother's more powerful computer to handle the rendering. I used a symbol fractal to map across the surface of the water, and another symbol fractal for the mass engine (cube) at the top. Basic noise renders gave some of the final textures. Ultra Fractal was used for the nested spirals that twist and turn the clouds above the ship. And now it's ready. All aboard!
